Bound for China – Congratulations to Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke

Nyhus Communications takes great pleasure in congratulating former Washington governor and current U.S. Secretary of  Commerce Gary Locke on his nomination as ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.

We can think of no better person to move forward with the strategic political and business partnerships between the United States and China. In his current role, Locke has worked hard to increase trade from the United States to China. Locke, himself said today that U.S. exports to China increased 34 percent last year, a remarkable achievement.

Locke, 61, is the first Chinese-American to serve as commerce secretary, and he would likewise be the first Chinese-American ambassador to China. Locke’s father and grandfather were born in China and settled in Washington state after emigrating to the U.S.

The Associated Press reported today that Obama sees boosting U.S. exports as a way to save and create jobs in an economy that is slowly coming out of the worst downturn in a generation. He has set a goal of doubling within five years the amount of American goods that are sold to other countries — an effort in which Locke has been a key cheerleader.

Roger Nyhus is especially proud of our long association, first as communications director for Washington Gov. Gary Locke, the nation’s first Chinese-American governor, and then representing and working closely with Locke through his nomination in 2009 to secretary of commerce.
