Washington United for Marriage Brings Together Diverse Groups to Win Freedom to Marry

by Joseph Vandenorth

The tipping point has arrived. These were the words that not only inspired me, but also convinced me that the time has come for Washington state to give all its citizens the freedom to marry.

At the Highland Community Center in Bellevue this morning, Washington United for Marriage announced the formation of its diverse, statewide coalition to advocate for legislation legalizing civil marriage for lesbian and gay couples in 2012. This impressive coalition includes organizations, congregations, unions and businesses from around Washington state, including leadership from Equal Rights Washington, Human Rights Campaign, the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington, Legal Voice, and Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest.

Nyhus Communications is very pleased to announce that we are Washington United for Marriage’s strategic communications and advocacy partner. Throughout our firm, we are energized to win the freedom to marry for LGBT couples.

From working with the members of Washington United for Marriage, I can personally attest to how impressive and experienced these individuals are. It has been inspiring to hear about Washington United for Marriage’s commitment to all lesbian and gay couples around the state. They truly want to empower people to share their stories and speak to their legislators about their loving, committed families that deserve to be recognized by civil marriage.

Washington United for Marriage’s coalition will continue to grow in support and momentum over the coming months. If obtaining the freedom to marry is something that you or your organization believes in, then please visit www.WashingtonUnitedForMarriage.org for more information. You can also connect with Washington United for Marriage on social media at Twitter.com/WA4Marriage and at Facebook.com/WashingtonUnited.

I’ll leave you with these words from Jennifer Shaw, deputy director of ACLU of Washington:

“The freedom to marry the person you love is fundamental to a democratic society. It is a matter of basic fairness that all loving, committed couples should be able to marry.”
