Nyhus Hires Communications Industry Veteran Jim Blundell to Bolster Growing Public Affairs Practice
Firm’s Integrated Public Affairs and PR Approach Sets it Apart
SEATTLE – July 28, 2009 – Nyhus Communications LLC, a leading Seattle-based strategic communications and advocacy firm, today announced the addition of Jim Blundell as vice president of public affairs.
Blundell, formerly vice president of corporate and public affairs at Edelman Seattle, joins the Nyhus team at a pivotal time in the company’s growth. Even through this economic downturn, Nyhus has been attracting and winning national and international clients with its integrated public affairs and public relations approach.
“Jim brings incredible private and public sector strategic communications and advocacy experience to our clients and team,” said Roger Nyhus, president and CEO. “In Jim, we found a dynamic public affairs counselor who understands the intersection of politics, government, business and the community. Jim has advised CEOs in key sectors such as technology, clean energy and life sciences.”
Blundell will lead and grow Nyhus’ public affairs team and provide strategic counsel and thought leadership to clients. Blundell will also help open a Nyhus office in Washington D.C. in the coming year. He joins the Nyhus senior staff, which includes Roger Nyhus; Sally Poliak, chief operating officer; and Megan Kahn, vice president of public relations.
“I’m really looking forward to joining Nyhus, a young, energetic firm that’s poised for growth and success,” Blundell said. “Roger has built a strong firm, and I’m looking to help him build a strong public affairs presence in the Northwest, Washington D.C. and beyond.”
Blundell said that the opportunity to come to Nyhus, a smaller firm than his previous employer, intrigues him. “To help build a practice, as well as pursue business and clientele whose missions mirror my own passions, is an exciting opportunity,” Blundell said.
Blundell served as vice president at Edelman Seattle, where he led the firm’s Corporate and Public Affairs practice. He has worked with clients across the corporate spectrum, including in the areas of technology, telecommunications, energy and life sciences. He also has solid legislative, regulatory and legal experience.
Prior to Edelman, Blundell also managed legislative and regulatory programs, political affairs, industry affairs and local grassroots efforts. He was vice president of external affairs for Alltel Wireless and Western Wireless, where he led the effort by Western Wireless to become the first-ever wireless carrier to achieve eligibility and get financial support from the federal universal service program, resulting in annual revenue of $60 million.
He began his career in 1989 as a law clerk to Judge Gerry Alexander, practiced law with the Olympia firm of Owens Davies Mackie, and served as legislative counsel to U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton on environment and natural resource issues. Blundell was also house counsel to the Washington State House of Representatives for four years.
Blundell graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Washington and received his law degree from Santa Clara University, where he was editor of the Santa Clara Law Review.

The Puget Sound Areas’s Most Influential
People of 2006 Influential Acts: Roger Nyhus
SEATTLE — November, 2006 — The CEO of public relations firm Nyhus Communications (nyhus.com), Roger Nyhus, 38, is the marketing and media relations mastermind behind many of the city’s hippest, coming-soon condos, including Fifteen Twenty-One Second Avenue tower and the high-profile Four Seasons Private Residences Seattle. The media’s go-to guy for condo quotes also manages marketing for Paul Allen’s ambitious South Lake Union creation, 2200 Westlake, and Queen Anne’s super-sexy Lumen – when he’s not representing such seminally Seattle clients as the Woodland Park Zoo and the Downtown Seattle Association. In September, Nyhus, whose resume includes serving as former governor Gary Locke’s communication director, earned a spot on the Puget Sound Business Journal’s competitive “40 Under 40” list. And aptly, this June, he upgraded his own digs–opening a swanky office suite downtown.
